Omega is bringing the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 onto the market under the reference 311.92.44.30.01.001. The case, bezel, pushers and clasp are made entirely of black zirconium oxide ceramic. To contrast with the black ceramic, Omega painted the chronophe hands yellow. The word Speedmaster on the dial and Tachymétre on the bezel are also in yellow. The strap of the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 is a perforated black leather strap with a yellow rubber interior. It is closed with a pin buckle. In order to be able to read the time perfectly at any time, the hands, indices and the tachymeter scale were filled with Super-LumiNova.
The Apollo 8 mission
This Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission. Apollo 8 was the first manned flight to the moon and the astronauts on this spacecraft were the first to see the far side of the moon with their own eyes. The “We'll See You On The Other Side” slogan engraved on the caseback comes from one of these astronauts. He said the sentence shortly before the radio connection to Earth was lost as the spacecraft flew to the far side of the moon.
Remarkable editing
The masterpiece of the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 is the hand-wound caliber 1869. This has been blackened and can be clearly seen through the skeletonized dial and the sapphire crystal back. The movement was laser-machined to resemble the surface of the moon. On the dial side it was kept relatively bright, this is intended to reflect the view of the moon from the earth. The side of the caseback, on the other hand, is intended to represent the dark side of the moon, which cannot be seen from Earth.
